  1. Quagmire

From the recording Quagmire

This piece was written as a tune first before being arranged for jazz orchestra. It is entitled as such for the fact that the tune remains on a pedal and barely moves, save a brief release that passes in the blink of an eye, thereby giving the feeling of being stuck, "in a jam" with very little wiggle room; a place where I think I was when I composed it.

The orchestration was completed December 12, 2004. It features solos for trumpet, alto, trombone and baritone sax along with some integral drum fills in a surprise Latin section in the middle of a long form. It is playable by good high school and college ensembles. It runs about nine minutes.
